Photoshop just got a massive upgrade thanks to Adobe Firefly generative AI
One thing about Adobe’s Firefly platform is that it uses artwork that comes from the company’s own Adobe Stock images, along with openly licensed and public domain content. This allows features like Generative Fill to use content without having to deal with copyright restrictions. Technically AI assistance has been Adobe products for some time, but that more mundane tweaking of lighting shadows etc. That took a step forward with the neural filters which allowed you to change lighting and tones as well as skin appearance and facial expression and added AI enabled photo retouching. Other catalysts for the Figma deal include Adobe reaching “some saturation levels” across Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign, while competing increasingly “head-on” with Canva in the growing non-professional market.
AI tools are here and are meant to be experimented with, so go and try this for yourself, but also break the rules and see what happens, you might be surprised, you are only limited by your own imagination. If you zoom in really close, then the results do start to fall apart as they do have a fake generated look to them, but at first glance and for a few minutes of work, this is truly phenomenal stuff. How about if you want a little more control over what is added to the expanded background? The AI revolution is upon on, and as photographers, we are perhaps one of the most vulnerable groups to AI as it could render the camera obsolete. But rather than get all doom and gloom about where our AI future is headed, we can instead embrace the change and work out how it can work for us and not against us.

The result was impressive, and it looked like the plants had been a part of the original photo from the start. Firefly is trained on an Adobe Stock library, too, meaning nothing the AI generates will be based on other people’s work, branding or intellectual property. That’s brilliant for creators, ensuring that they can use the imagery created without fear of any legal issues. The AI will automatically match perspective, lighting and style to the pre-existing image, meaning you can spend less time faffing with lighting angles and more time being creative.
Additionally, take advantage of online platforms like social media or professional networking sites to gather opinions from a wider audience. I don’t think they want every single ‘distraction’ removed from photos just because that’s what photographers tell other photographers is important in critiques. What’s a distraction to you and me, might be something deeply important or sentimental to our clients. I want to believe that my genrative ai clients don’t want fake sides added to portrait images just because it’s possible. But for removing things like fire exit signs, annoying stuff on ceilings, fire extinguishers or anything that’s made its way into your photos, this generative fill tool is WAY better. I love the masking tools within Lightroom and my prediction is that it won’t be long until this generative technology will make its way into a Lightroom update.
In the vibrant realm of visual storytelling, the importance of graphic design is immeasurable. Leading the charge in this domain is software giant Adobe, renowned for its groundbreaking program, Photoshop. Recently, Adobe announced a significant development – the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into Photoshop, marking a new era in graphic design. But what does this mean for creators, and how can users unlock this AI power within Photoshop? In addition to basic tonal adjustments, Photoshop’s levels adjustment also provides advanced options like channel blending for fine-tuning colours.
- From optimizing simple work operations to making crucial strategic decisions, our AI development services integrate automated solutions, paving the way for new business opportunities.
- Users can input a description such as “long-haired dachshund with long flowing rainbow hair,” and Firefly will materialize this vision into an image.
- This tool allows you to make precise changes to the tonal range and colour balance of your images, resulting in a dramatic transformation.
- Chandra Sinnathamby, Adobe’s director of digital media and strategy for Asia-Pacific, highlighted that Firefly aims to streamline the design process, rather than substitute human creativity.
The company believes the new service will act as a “co-pilot” on Photoshop, helping to improve graphic design instead of replacing the need for human workers entirely. This is partly genrative ai due to the training set used, but Adobe has also implemented additional safeguards. “We married that with a series of prompt engineering things that we know,” explained Yap.

Adobe Adds GenAI into Photoshop with Firefly Capabilities
With these powerful tools at your disposal, exploring the world of digital painting has never been easier with Adobe Photoshop CC’s AI capabilities. While AI in design and image editing has proven to be a game-changer, it’s important to note that it is a tool that complements human creativity rather than replacing it. The fusion of human imagination and AI’s analytical power leads to breakthrough designs and novel approaches to visual storytelling. As AI technology continues to evolve, the creative possibilities are boundless.
However, changing your whole image goes beyond simply using editing software; it requires understanding the principles of graphic design and storytelling. By thinking critically about the narrative you want to convey through your visuals, you can strategically choose colours, typography, imagery, and layout that align with your message. The art of visual storytelling lies in harmonising these elements cohesively while evoking emotions and engaging viewers on a deeper level. Through thoughtful graphic design choices paired with Adobe AI Photoshop’s capabilities, one can truly embrace narrative in their visuals and captivate audiences with their story-telling abilities.

The brief is simple remove the background and make it pure white but keep shadows. At first glance the AI I think looks better than me, but when you look closely you’ll see it has done weird things. To do all of this, Photoshop sends parts of a given image to Firefly — not the entire image, though the company is also experimenting with that — and creates a new layer for the results. If the Generative Fill button is not visible in your Photoshop installation, you must switch to the beta branch. Adobe claims that Firefly Generative Fill will be a default option in Photoshop by the end of the year. An active Adobe Creative Cloud subscription is also necessary to access this feature.
Editorial independence means being able to give an unbiased verdict about a product or company, with the avoidance of conflicts of interest. To ensure this is possible, every member of the editorial staff follows a clear code of conduct. This time when you click ‘Generative Fill’ you will want to describe what you hope Adobe’s AI is going to create for you. For this attempt, I decided to describe it as a ‘sunny Italian village harbor’. From the perspective of leaders within the AI tech space, the regulation and attention pointed towards AI should be on par with that of pandemics and nuclear war. As told in an open letter, leaders believe in a non-zero chance of extinction of the human race at the hands of the new advancements in AI.

Adobe has also sought to avoid “abuse” of its AI tools by training Firefly on over 100 million images from its library, as well as images in the public domain where copyright has expired. Earlier, fake images of former President Donald Trump scuffling with police went viral. This is in addition to an AI-generated image of the Pope wearing a stylish puffer jacket which went viral on social media. The news comes as the company looks at integrating AI into its creative products, especially with Firefly, a new family creative generative model introduced in March this year.
