Photoshop just got a massive upgrade thanks to Adobe Firefly generative AI

One thing about Adobe’s Firefly platform is that it uses artwork that comes from the company’s own Adobe Stock images, along with openly licensed and public domain content. This allows features like Generative Fill to use content without having to deal with copyright restrictions. Technically AI assistance has been Adobe products for some time, but that more mundane tweaking of lighting shadows etc. That took a step forward with the neural filters which allowed you to change lighting and tones as well as skin appearance and facial expression and added AI enabled photo retouching. Other catalysts for the Figma deal include Adobe reaching “some saturation levels” across Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign, while competing increasingly “head-on” with Canva in the growing non-professional market.

AI tools are here and are meant to be experimented with, so go and try this for yourself, but also break the rules and see what happens, you might be surprised, you are only limited by your own imagination. If you zoom in really close, then the results do start to fall apart as they do have a fake generated look to them, but at first glance and for a few minutes of work, this is truly phenomenal stuff. How about if you want a little more control over what is added to the expanded background? The AI revolution is upon on, and as photographers, we are perhaps one of the most vulnerable groups to AI as it  could render the camera obsolete. But rather than get all doom and gloom about where our AI future is headed, we can instead embrace the change and work out how it can work for us and not against us.

The result was impressive, and it looked like the plants had been a part of the original photo from the start. Firefly is trained on an Adobe Stock library, too, meaning nothing the AI generates will be based on other people’s work, branding or intellectual property. That’s brilliant for creators, ensuring that they can use the imagery created without fear of any legal issues. The AI will automatically match perspective, lighting and style to the pre-existing image, meaning you can spend less time faffing with lighting angles and more time being creative.

Additionally, take advantage of online platforms like social media or professional networking sites to gather opinions from a wider audience. I don’t think they want every single ‘distraction’ removed from photos just because that’s what photographers tell other photographers is important in critiques. What’s a distraction to you and me, might be something deeply important or sentimental to our clients. I want to believe that my genrative ai clients don’t want fake sides added to portrait images just because it’s possible. But for removing things like fire exit signs, annoying stuff on ceilings, fire extinguishers or anything that’s made its way into your photos, this generative fill tool is WAY better. I love the masking tools within Lightroom and my prediction is that it won’t be long until this generative technology will make its way into a Lightroom update.

To do all of this, Photoshop sends parts of a given image to Firefly — not the entire image, though the company is also experimenting with that — and creates a new layer for the results. If the Generative Fill button is not visible in your Photoshop installation, you must switch to the beta branch.
